Step Inside the Forge
From Earth
to Blade
How a thousand-year tradition turns iron into a blade.
The Journey of Steel
Six transformations from raw earth to finished blade
01
Iron Sand
The journey begins in the riverbeds of Miyazaki, where iron-rich sand is gathered โ a practice unchanged for a thousand years.
02
Smelting
In the traditional tatara furnace, impurities float away and pure steel โ tamahagane โ remains.
03
Forging
The smith heats the steel to a glowing orange, then strikes. Each hammer blow compresses the metal's grain structure, building strength.
04
Quenching
At precisely the right temperature, the blade plunges into the pure water of a Miyazaki mountain stream. This moment defines the edge.
05
Polishing
Eight stages of whetstone, from rough to mirror-finish. This is where sharpness is born.
06
Signature
The final act. The smith inscribes their name into the blade โ a promise made visible in steel.
The Breath of the Artisan
We select a knife only when its maker, origin, materials, construction, and care can be explained clearly and verified.
